Actioning the text

The scene I have chosen to look at is Act One, Scene Three. This is the scene where we are first introduced to my chosen character of Fraulein Schneider. An active verb I would use to describe the whole scene would be, 'to get sympathy'. This scene is where Schneider meets Cliff Bradshaw and tries to convince him to rent a room. Early on it is clear that Bradshaw cannot afford to pay the rent that Schneider is after, however Schneider bargains with him to get the price she wants. Immediately it is clear that Schneider is desperate for the room to be rented so she can have a steady income. The conversation between the two characters creates a sense of sympathy because the struggle Schneider is going through is made clear to the audience. The scene then goes on to a song where Schneider gives an insight into her past. Here we learn that she used to be rich but has since lost her fortune and her man. Here sympathy is felt as Schneider states that only memory lives on, giving a sense that her life has changed so dramatically that now she has to settle for the life she now lives. If i was going to focus my make-up and hair design on the verb 'to get sympathy' I would make her look tired, creating dark circles under the eyes. Chapped lips, and deep wrinkles with sad eyes to really draw out sympathy in the audience. Maybe add some eye drops for when Schneider reminisces on her old life. The hair I imagine to be an up-do of curls, with strands coming out everywhere creating a messy look to make her seem dishevelled. The hair would be fully grey to age her. I think that this idea would show how weathered she has become from the life that she now lives.

Above is my idea for the look of Fraulein Schneider from the verb 'to get sympathy'. The skin is aged to show how Schneider has been through a lot. Latex would be applied around the eyes and lips to show the wrinkles that are setting into the skin. The lips are made up of M.A.C Lip mix in black and red. This will be applied with the finger to show that the lip has come off during her day and she has had no time to re-apply it. The eyes are darker underneath showing the character is tired. A little eyeshadow mixed with Vaseline is used under the lashes and upper lid to show that her makeup has run during the day. The characters eyebrows and hair will be grey to show the characters age.

Above is my hair chart for the verb chosen. I thought that to get sympathy the character would need to look a bit unkempt to show that they are struggling, therefore I have designed the hairstyle with this in mind. The hair is curled and then pinned up at the back to create a messy curled bun. Little wisps of hair will come out at the front to show that Schneider has not had time to fix her hair.
